Junior/Senior Students Play Traditional Game in Gym Class

Play a baseball game by using hand gestures of rock, paper, and scissors. Kids will enjoy this non traditional baseball game as a gym activity.

Get students active by having them participate in a rock, paper, and scissors baseball game. This game follows the concept of traditional baseball with a few alterations.

Before students begin playing baseball, all students need to learn the rules for paper, rock, and scissors.

Rock Paper and Scissors Positions

  • Rock is your hand in a vertical fist position.
  • Paper is your hand out flat, palm facing down.
  • Scissors is making a vertical V with your pointer and middle finger.

Game Rules

  • Two students are required to play rock, paper, and scissors. Players face each other and extend their arm slightly in front of them in the rock position. The rock sits on their opposite hand that is palm up.
  • Together, players say rock, paper, scissors as they move their rock position up and down.
  • As the players say scissors they show one of the three gestures.
  • Players win if their hand gesture beats the other players hand gestures.

RPS Wiinning Gestures

  • Rock crushes scissors
  • Scissors cuts paper
  • Paper covers rock

Baseball RPS

  • All players begin at home plate. No pitcher or catcher is required for the game.
  • Game commences with players finding an opponent to play RPS. Winners of the RPS, run to first base. Losers of RPS must remain at home plate and continue to find an opponent to play against.
  • Players at first base, play against an opponent. Winners run to second base and losers must go back to home plate. Losers must find an opponent to Play RPS.
  • Players at second base, play against an opponent. Winners advance to third base and losers must go back to first base.
  • Players at third base, play against an opponent. Winners advance to home and losers move back to second base.
  • Players at home must play against a teacher or selected students. If they win, students receive a point, otherwise they must return to third base. It is ideal to give students a clothespeg to represent their run.
  • Players begin at 1st place after they have made it home. They continue move around the bases until the game finishes.

Baseball Options

  • Students must run from 1st-2nd base, skip from 2nd-3rd, and crab crawl from 3rd-home. Students and teacher may change up the different ways they travel from each base.
  • Students are to randomly play against all students and not wait for friends.
  • Time the baseball game. Students have 15 minutes to score the most runs.
  • Play on a baseball field.
  • Students may be given clothes begs, tickets, popsicle sticks or stickers to represent their runs.

Rock, paper, and scissors (RPS) Baseball is a wonderful game to get all students moving in the class. No skill is required for this and all players have an equal chance of scoring the most runs. RPS can be incorporated into a variety of physical educational games.
