parents and teens are frustrated with each other during middle school. Tips for communicating with your teen during middle school

Parents can be easily frustrated under the right circumstances. Junior high and middle school has many unknowns for parents that cause anxious moments during the year. You can help your parents stay calm by trying to avoid the “Top 5” trouble spots.

Top 5 trouble spots that frustrate parents

  1. Making plans without talking with your parents
  2. Assuming your parents are always available to take you places
  3. Coming home later than the agreed upon time
  4. Forgetting to call while you are out
  5. Being somewhere other than where you said you would be

Do any of the situations listed above sound familiar to you as a student or to the middle school parent reading this post?

Avoid the “Top 5” by focusing on honest and accurate communication.

  1. Act responsibly by fulfilling commitments (school, home and extracurricular activities).
  2. You might be surprised at how willing your parents are to help you find time for friends and a social life when your actions show a mature attitude.
  3. Parents understand you are growing up and want independence, but they also feel responsible for your personal growth and well being. Have patience, your parents are new to middle school too.
  4. Share this list as part your family’s Weekly Check-in or in a private conversation with your teen.
