I left it kind of vague so that people could interpret it however they liked. But I was leaning toward how many total hours--not just student contact or instructional time--are middle school teachers spending at school. Just from friends of mine, it seems that many teacher contract days are about 8 hours and of course, there's always more to do before school starts and after the kids leave!
